About Goldgulden
The history of the Austrian Gulden dates back to the time of the Austrian Empire. At that time the gulden was the currency of the empire and later also of Austria-Hungary.
In 1858, the Gulden was introduced instead of the Thaler because of the Viennese coin treaty. The reason for this was that the taler, unlike the guilder, was not counted in the decimal system. Although the Gulden, marked by the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph, had already been replaced by the Krone in 1882, he was still in circulation in Austria until 1900.
