More information about Gold Kangaroo 1/2
The Australian Nugget (Gold Kangaroo) is an Australian gold coin which was first minted at Perth Mint in 1986 and, thanks to the annual changing motif on the front, enjoys great popularity worldwide. The coin has a fineness of 999,9 and is recognised legal tender.
Since 1987, the Australian Nugget has been minted in units of 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce and 1 ounce. The value is between 5 and 100 Australian Dollar. Meanwhile larger units of 2 ounce, 10 ounce and 1 kilogram are available. In 2010, a 2-Dollar version of this coin with a weight of 0,5 gram was minted. In 2011, the Perth Mint even produced coin units of 1 tonne — this means the Gold Kangaroo is both the smallest and largest bullion coin in the world.
Until 1989, unusual gold nuggets found in Australia were depicted on the front of the coin, hence the name. Since 1990, the gold coin has annual changing motifs of kangaroos and since then the official name reads “Australian Kangaroo“. Larger units of the Gold Kangaroo, like the 2 ounce, 10 ounce and 1 kilogram version depict the same motif every year, the “Red Kangaroo“. On the back, as with all coins of the Commonwealth, the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is visible.
